Vishu, is celebrated with joy and splendour every year by Malayalis in Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and other parts of the country and world. Vishu signifies the sun’s transition into the first solar month  Medam Rashi, and is generally celebrated somewhere in the the middle of April in the Gregorian calendar. This year, Vishu will be celebrated on April 14. Following the solar cycle of the lunisolar Hindu calendar, Vishu is observed on the first day of the month called Medam.

In Sanskrit language 'Vishu' means 'equal' and it is not only a festival of Malayalees. The festival is celebrated all across India with different names. In Assam Vishu festival is celebrated as Bihu where as in Punjab the festival is recalled as Baisakhi.

"KANI" the Malayalam word literally means "that which is seen first" and in Tulu it means "auspicious", so "Vishukkani" or "Bisukani" means "that which is seen first on Vishu". The traditional belief is that one's future is a function of what one experiences, that the new year will be better if one views auspicious joyful things as the first thing on Vishu. Therefore, Malayali Hindu women as well as Tamil Brahmins with Kerala origin spend the day before preparing a setting, usually a tray, of auspicious items. This setting is the first thing they see when they wake up on the Vishu.

The Vishukkani setting consists of items such as rice, golden lemon, golden cucumber, coconut cut open, jack fruit, kanmashi Kajal, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror (Vaalkannadi), golden yellow Konna flowers (Cassia fistula) which bloom in the season of Vishu, holy Hindu texts, coins or currency notes, oil lamp (nilavilakku), and an image of the Hindu god Vishnu.

The tradition has been that one of the members of the house, typically the mom or elderly person lights up the lamps at dawn, then goes to each member of her family one by one, blindfolds and wakes each one up, walks them to the front of the setting. She then releases the blindfold so one can see the setting, and then greets the Vishu day.

Vishu Sadhya, Vishu feast, is a special dishes called Vishu Kanji, Thoran and Vishu katta are more important on the new year day. The Kanji is made of rice, coconut milk and spices. Vishu katta is a delicacy prepared from freshly harvested rice powder and coconut milk served with jaggery. For Thoran, the side dish, there are also mandatory ingredients.

Other important Vishu delicacies include Veppampoorasam (a bitter preparation of neem) and Mampazhappulissery (a sour mango soup) Even temple offerings called bewu bella, include a mix of sweet jaggery, bitter neem, and other flavors.  The mixing of sweet, salty, sour, bitter and astringent flavors for the new year Vishu meal is similar to the pacchadi food prepared on new year day such as Ugadi by Hindus elsewhere in the peninsular regions of the Indian subcontinent. These traditional festive recipes, that combine different flavors, are a symbolic reminder that one must expect all flavors of experiences in the coming new year, that no event or episode is wholly sweet or bitter, experiences are transitory and ephemeral, and to make the most from them.

On the occasion of Vishu peopole are buying new clothes f is called Puthukodi or Vishukodi. There is also a popular tradition of elders giving money to younger ones or dependents of the family. This is called Vishukkaineetam. Another tradition is of giving alms and contributing to community charity. Children enjoy setting off firecrackers. A tradition of predicting the forecast of various birth stars was there associated with the festival of Vishu.
Love, peace, hope and joy all year through
These are my special Vishu wishes for you

Vishu the traditional new year of Kerala | Vishu Greeting

Vishu, the traditional new year, in Kerala celebrating usually in the second week of April in the Gregorian calendar. Vishu is also a harvest festival with traditional fervor and gaiety, looking ahead to a season of peace and prosperity.   Devout Hindus turn out in their best, to start the new year with a visit to the temple. This occasion signifies the sun's transit into the Meda Raasi (first zodiac sign) according to Indian astrological calculations, and represents the vernal equinox. "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal".

The most important event of the day is the 'Vishukani', the auspicious sight of the favorite deity.  Vishukkani, which literally means "the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up". Family members woke up in the wee hours to see "Vishukkani," the ceremonial sighting of auspicious articles like rice, fruits, gold and flowers tastefully arranged in brass vessels, symbolizing hope and promise. The Vishukkani consists of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles like raw rice, fresh lemon, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, yellow flowers konna (Cassia fistula), and a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called uruli in the puja room of the house. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside.

'Vishukaineettam' is the other one custom and long tradition in the Vishu day.  Elders will give coins to children as part of the custom known as 'Vishukaineettam.' For the children, Vishu comes as a bonanza: Their pockets get more swollen, as it is customary for elders to give a 'vishukaineetam' (a gift) to younger ones in the family.  In the Malabar region in north Kerala, children ushered in Vishu by bursting crackers in the wee hours.

Vishu is also a day of feasting. A sumptuous lunch comprising various dishes and delicacies, mostly made of seasonal fruits and vegetables. The foods consist of equal proportions of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items. Feast items include Veppampoorasam (a bitter preparation of neem) and Mampazhappulissery (a sour mango soup).  Most of the place Vishu feast celebrating with a 26-course Kerala lunch that is served on a large plantain leaf.

Devotees visit temples like Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple or Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple to have a "Vishukkani Kazhcha" in the early hours of "Vishu" day.  This day also marked the beginning of the 'Vishu Vilakku' festival in several temples in the northern Kerala. In rural areas, In the northern districts of Kerala fire crackers too are burst in celebration.

The Vishukkani, also called Kanikanal, is inseparable from Vishu. According to the age-old belief of Malayalees, an auspicious kani (first sight) at dawn on the Vishu day is lucky for the entire year. As a result, the Vishukkani is prepared with a lot of care to make it the most positive sight so as to bring alive a wonderful, propitious year ahead.  The responsibility of decorating the Kani belongs to the oldest lady of the house.

Like Vishu, similar festivals are celebrated in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam, India, In Assam, this day is called Bihu, in Punjab Baisakhi (originally Vaishakhi), in West Bengal Pohela Boishakh, in Tamil Nadu Tamil Puthandu (Tamil new year) or Vishu punyakalam. Tuluvas celebrate Bisu.
